GDC checklist (flying over Canada)

The map shows we’re leaving Canada, and there’s still 4:36 hours of life to spend. So let’s spend it in a useful way and try to recap the last week.

flying over the canada

  • Met with Qualcomm graphic engineers. Guys were very friendly and introduced me to their lead, who was highly interested in the feedback and offered personal help and support. Hope this means Rej won’t need to workaround driver bugs anymore.
  • Found Nvidia evangelists who collect good games to promote and maybe fund. Promised some high-end stuff. I guess Unity Android users may eventually find a reason to do games for top hardware x).
  • Talked to ARM guys, got Mali devkit from them, discussed rumors about Samsung device with stereo display, tried it – my eyes hurt from 3D displays :( ARM folks were really friendly, offered the help, the tools and the devkit. This translates as Unity gonna run awesome on the new devices that will appear later this year.
  • Nvidia presentation at Unity booth, GDC

  • Was introduced to top Google and Nvidia engineers. Discussed tech stuff. OK, Erik was discussing and I was listening and tried looking smart x). However did it good enough for guys recognizing me and shaking my hand the next day. Oh, and got invitations to the Google and Nvidia private parties to strengthen the friendship.
  • Was introduced to the CEO of Nival Networks. I love good and friendly people. Nival does really awesome stuff and are easy to work with.
  • Was introduced to the CEO of Scaleform, got some respect and a personal demonstration of their stuff for iPhones and Androids. He was kind enough to show the debugger tools. Not so good tho, the interface works only a bit slower than native (on Android Galaxy Tab), but even a flying cube on a plane scene results in 15fps…
  • Spend uberproductive time with our awesome business and marketing paratroopers. I love working at Unity, lots of good people here, lots of good ideas and opportunities. It’s all about the proper prioritizing (and maybe some luck) now :P
  • Was involved in designing the new initiative that may change the workflow in Unity as much as the Asset Store did. Thanks Ekaterina!
  • Talked to the Chair guys about Infinity Blade, watched their session (checkout their slides here). Looks like Unreal for iOS does not contain much cool technologies, and for the Chair guys it was crucial to spend some time with Apple devs to make the game look good and still work on the iPad and the iPhone 4.
  • Saw some really good mobile projects, some are on the finishing line, some are just on the drawing board. But the future looks promising. And what I liked the most, is that not only the big guys showed good stuff. Anyway, it’s mostly indies who really do innovate.
  • Got a big bag of new devices. Eventually we have some production Tegra devices and a Honeycomb based thing.
  • Learned to pronounce ‘Schiphol luchthaven’ and ‘Sverige’ correctly. No seriously…

Unity booth at GDC

Thanks everyone from our community who took a chance to appear at the booth and say ‘hey Oleg, I am … from ….’. It’s so nice to associate people with faces and not with emails on the beta or nicks on the forums.

Got some Unity tshirts that proved to grant access to closed parties and VIP zones in clubs. Will try to make it to the KLM lounge at Schipol same way x)
